Last updated 18 August 2026. This page describes what this site actually does — it was written against the live page source, not from a template.

The short version

This is a personal site. There are no forms, no sign-ups, no newsletter and no accounts. I do not collect your name, email address or any other personal detail, because there is nothing here that asks for one.

The only optional tracking is Google Analytics, and it stays switched off unless you press Accept.

Analytics

If you accept, this site uses Google Analytics 4 to count visits and — the part I actually care about — record which site sent you here. I want to know when an AI assistant recommends me and someone follows the link.

Consent defaults are set before the Google script loads, and they are scoped by region:

  • UK, EU/EEA and Switzerland — analytics is denied by default. Nothing is stored unless you press Accept.
  • Everywhere else — analytics starts enabled, and pressing Decline switches it off and keeps it off.

That split follows the law in each place: opt-in where consent is required, opt-out where it is not. Advertising and personalisation storage is denied everywhere, for everyone, always — I do not run ads. IP anonymisation is on. Declining changes nothing about how the site works.

Third parties that see your IP address

Loading any web page means your browser contacts the servers that host it. On this site that means:

  • Cloudflare — hosts the site and keeps standard server logs, including IP addresses, for security and abuse prevention.
  • No font CDN. The typeface is served from this domain, not from Google. Loading a webfont from a third party sends your IP address to that third party before any consent banner can appear, so I self-host it instead.
  • Google Analytics — only after you accept.

Links to dev.to, Medium, LinkedIn, Upwork and DOI records are ordinary links. Those sites have their own policies and I have no visibility into what they do once you arrive.

Automated crawlers

This site logs visits from AI crawlers such as GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot, because a large part of what I work on is measuring whether AI systems can find and cite pages. That log records the crawler's identity and the page requested. It does not identify human visitors.

Changing your mind

Your choice is stored only in your own browser. To reset it, clear this site's data in your browser settings, or press the button below and the banner will ask again on your next page load.

Your rights

If you are in the UK or EU, the GDPR gives you the right to ask what data relates to you, to have it corrected or deleted, and to object to processing. The lawful basis for analytics here is your consent, which you can withdraw at any time using the button above.

In practice I hold almost nothing about individual visitors — analytics data is aggregated and I cannot connect it to a person.
